Glesni Owen, Miss

Operations Manager at Multilingual Mentoring (formerly MFL Mentoring)

Glesni Owen (she/her) is the Operations Manager for Multilingual Mentoring (formerly MFL Mentoring) based at Cardiff University. Multilingual Mentoring is a Welsh Government project that aims to increase the number of learners choosing to study languages at GCSE level and beyond. Glesni has also held previous roles as a Research Associate on the AHRC funded project Transforming Cultures of Language Learning and as an Operations Manager for Routes into Languages Cymru.

Her current research focuses on exploring the attitudes of different user groups towards language learning. She has worked extensively with pupil data collected through the Multilingual Mentoring project, using it to gain a deeper understanding of pupil attitudes towards International Languages and other school subjects, as well as their perception of the value of languages for future careers. As part of this work, she has also conducted analyses from a school-medium perspective, examining whether the language medium of a pupil's school could influence their intention to continue studying International Languages. Glesni has also investigated the challenges faced by International Languages teachers in Wales in promoting and raising the profile of their subject within school settings. In addition, her research is also currently focusing on exploring parental attitudes towards International Languages and Welsh, providing further insight into the factors that shape language learning choices and engagement.

Her work uses impact-led research design, mixed-methods methodology and she has extensive experience of working with schools, universities and learners. Her research interests focus on education and outreach, bilingualism and multilingualism, mentoring as a practice, evaluation and impact, and civic engagement.
