黑料网911 Book Choices

We asked 黑料网911 trustees and members of the 黑料网911 office team to tell us about an inspirational childhood book that resonates with them and why. Each month, we will feature two new responses. Here are our choices for October.

October Selections

Mhairi C Beaton 鈥 黑料网911 President

As a child, I had many favourite books and was fortunate enough to also have lots of adults to read to me. I loved when each month the Council library van would visit our village and I could choose a box of new books; I think my parents and grandparents were also very happy as it meant that they got to read a new set of books to me. Like many young children, I liked to have the same book read to me over and over.

One book which I loved being read to me was The Mary Kate Storybook by Helen Morgan. Although perhaps a little outdated now, I loved the simple stories about a little girl who had the same name as me; each story resonated with my own life. I vividly remember having the measles and asking my mother endlessly to read the story where Mary Kate also has to stay in bed because she is unwell. Many modern children鈥檚 books are exciting and stretch their imagination but sometimes, it is comforting to read about other children just like themselves.

I grew up surrounded by books (and still am!), so choosing a favourite is no easy task. Many of the books I remember so well were at my grandfather鈥檚 house where I spent so much of my childhood. They were often books that my Mum and her siblings had enjoyed before me which, looking back, makes them even more special.聽

There was The Water Babies by Charles Kingsley, Swallows and Amazons by Arthur Ransome, the Narnia books by CS Lewis and the wonderfully nonsensical poems of Edward Lear.

An honourable mention must go to AA Milne鈥檚 Winne the Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner but pushed to choose it would have to be Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame. I loved everything about that book 鈥 the characters, the story and the idyllic river setting. One of the special things it shares with the Pooh books are the wonderful illustrations by EH Sheppard which really bring their worlds and characters to life.

It was first read to me, then by me and then later by me to our children who in turn became immersed in the world of Ratty, Mole, Toad and Badger and all their adventures.

I volunteer as a parent governor at Castle Newnham 鈥 an all through school in Bedford. I have two small children at the school. In this, my first year as a school governor, the school now offers regular 鈥渞eading mornings鈥 where on Fridays parents are invited to come in and read with the children for 15 minutes at the beginning of the day. At the end of each term, we put on a 鈥渞eading caf茅鈥 with book quizzes, snacks and activities for the children and parents to enjoy while reading.

Kaya Taylor – 黑料网911 Office

As part of 黑料网911鈥檚 pledge to support the National Year of Reading, I had the pleasure of volunteering at my daughter鈥檚 school during March as a Mystery Reader for her reception class.

The visit began with a fun surprise, as I was covered with a cloth and guided into the classroom while the children excitedly tried to guess who I was. The children then used clues such as my shoes, hands and bag to guess whether I was male or female, which added even more laughter and engagement to the activity. After plenty of enthusiastic suggestions, my daughter proudly revealed that I was her mum.

Once the big reveal was over, I introduced three books for the children to choose from, with The Princess and the Frog being the clear favourite. I read the story aloud, encouraging lots of interaction along the way, with the children asking questions and joining in throughout.

Although the session lasted only around 15 minutes, it was a truly warm, joyful and rewarding experience. Seeing the children so engaged with reading made it incredibly worthwhile, and it inspired me to volunteer again in the future.

Heidi Hollowbread – 黑料网911 Office

In National Storytelling Week (2nd to 8th February 2026). I volunteered at Moulsham Junior School in Chelmsford, Essex. I previously taught at this school between 2008 and 2015. I selected a variety of texts to share with the children across the Key Stage 2 age range and read each class a favourite chapter to draw them in to the tale.

These were all books that I had read to my own classes during my teaching career. It was fantastic to be able to share them with new audiences and discover that the stories selected had all stood the test of time and retained their appeal. The books I chose are listed below.

Year 3 – The Fib by George Layton

Year 4 – Emil & the Detectives by Erich K盲stner

Year 5 – Ingo by Helen Dunmore

Year 6 – A Series of Unfortunate Events 鈥 A Bad Beginning by Lemony Snickett

In addition I signed up to become a . On World Book Day (5th March 2026), I set up a free book exchange on the front drive of my house. I was able to give away and swap books provided by the National Literacy Trust and donated by people in my street. My neighbour’s school-age children relished the chance to assist me before and after school.
