Postdoctoral Research Associate at Durham University

Elle Young joined Durham University in 2025 as a Postdoctoral Research Associate on the ‘From the Centre to the Periphery’ project funded by the Economic and Social Research Council. She has academic expertise in education research, social mobility and educational inequalities. She completed her PhD at Newcastle University, investigating young women’s resilience and wellbeing in New Delhi, India, employing mixed methods approaches including large-scale survey data and participatory arts-based research methods. Her research interests are to explore patterns of educational inequality and disadvantage through rigorous evaluation of policy interventions and educational programmes. She is currently leading qualitative data collection for the first quasi-experimental evaluation of the Department for Education’s Opportunity Areas programme, examining mechanisms that close regional gaps in education and skills. Her work focuses on understanding how educational interventions can improve life chances for disadvantaged young people.
